| 1. What are Recognized Local International Exchange Associations? |
 |
Each prefecture and designated city in Japan has drawn up guidelines for the promotion of local international exchange. Based on these guidelines, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) appoints private international exchange organizations best suited for the promotion of internationalization at the local level as Recognized Local International Exchange Associations.

| 2. Supporting the Conference of Recognized Local International Exchange Associations |

The Conference of Recognized Local International Exchange Associations is a conference that was established with Recognized Local International Exchange Associations as its members. As the secretariat for the conference, CLAIR promotes networking between the associations and also engages in the following support activities and projects:
- Domestic and overseas training programs for employees of associations
- Promotion of information sharing and exchange:
- Update the directory of Recognized Local International Exchange Associations
- Update the directory of Association employees
- Provide up-to-date information for “Multilingual Guide to Living in Japan”
- Exchange information via a mailing list
- Promote training for volunteer medical interpreters
- Cooperate in conferences on international exchange and cooperation
- Delivery of Regional Block Subsidies

| 3. Recognized Local International Exchange Associations Information Sharing Project |

Over the years, Local International Exchange Associations across the country have been accumulating a considerable amount of information. In collaboration with the Conference of Recognized Local International Exchange Associations, CLAIR is implementing various projects to increase the sharing of this precious information as well as promoting networking among associations. Through these efforts, the following projects have been undertaken:
- “International Living Q & A” is full of useful information gathered from across the country (primarily in Japanese)
- The “Multilingual Guide to Living in Japan”, compiled in 2002 with the collaboration of the Hyogo Prefecture, to provide daily life information in various languages to foreign residents in Japan.

- A “Manual to Create Multilingual Information” compiled in 2003 and based on the manual created by the Yokohama Association for International Communications and Exchanges. In addition, a “Basic Multilingual Glossary” was also created to readily provide information in five languages.
