Founding Motivation:
1)  Purpose
To take on a new approach to activities in Niigata Prefecture’s various international cooperation fields by improving NGO activities and fostering Niigata citizens’ awareness of international cooperation.
2)  Background
--Niigata has very few NGOs that are active abroad. The Niigata International Association felt a need to start this project, in cooperation with the Niigata NGO Network (N-Net), in order to help educate NGOs within the prefecture.
--Niigata citizens are not very aware of international cooperation projects within the prefecture. In order to raise this awareness, the participation of municipalities, prefectural citizens, and the media is necessary.
Project Outlines and Progress:
1) NGO Cultivation Support
A.  Create International Understanding Teaching Materials
--Establish a Teaching Materials Creation Committee and produce teaching materials
--Place an advertisement asking for schools that are willing to use the materials and conduct classes with them
B.  Group Leader Workshops
--Invite speakers from leading NGOs to conduct workshops for NGOs within the prefecture
2) Cultivation of International Cooperation Awareness
A.  Earth Campaign
Activities such as displaying panels showing photographs of NGO activities and photographs related to international cooperation, and creating and broadcasting programs about the “Fureai” Fund on television
B.  Activities by leading NGOs to raise awareness among citizens and prefectural NGOs
--Have leaders who work in leading NGOs from other prefectures that are supported by the “Fureai” Fund come to Niigata and visit elementary and junior high schools to teach about international understanding (10 schools)
--Conduct seminars at municipalities about international cooperation for Niigata citizens and NGOs (4 municipalities)

2004-2005

  • Niigata NGO Network
    Create international understanding teaching materials and conduct group leader workshops
  • Japan International Volunteer Center and another 4 NGOs
    Have teachers sent around the prefecture teaching about international understanding. (See above for project details)
