Assistance to Lessons at Filipino Elementary Schools (Philippines School Project)

Background:
In 1993 the City of Ashiya held an international symposium, the 1st Global Family Conference, with the presence of Her Honor Mrs. Corazon Aquino, former President of the Republic of The Philippines, as keynote speaker. At the panel discussion that followed, Mrs. Harue Kitamura, then mayor of Ashiya, proposed the creation of a youth exchange program between both countries. From the following year on, 1994, every summer an overseas youth workforce from Ashiya was dispatched to The Philippines with the aim of building a local multipurpose hall/facility. That accomplished, from 1999, the project switched to an educational initiative named The Philippine(s) School Project, consisting of providing recorder music training and introducing the Japanese culture to Filipino elementary schools.
Project Outline:
The applicants to the program receive instruction on how to teach the recorder, and then put this training to use at Filipino elementary schools for the period of one week.
Citizens of Ashiya donate recorders not used any more and stationery items that are utilized at local schools in The Philippines.
The personal cost of participation in the program - \148,000 - is paid in its entirety by the applicant.

Results and Future Prospects:
Through the exchange with local children and school staff, the members of the mission acquire valuable intercultural experiences while nurturing a sound volunteer spirit, which they put into practice upon returning to their country. The expansion of the program to a number of other schools is now under consideration.
Improvements:
the program should be better publicized to secure a stable number of participants every year.
