Development of friendship forest (Ning Xia afforestation cooperative project)

Motive for the start of project:
Friendship ties have existed since 1993. The Ning Xia side requested Shimane work together for the desert afforestation promotion.
Outline and Progress of Project:
1993- Entering of ties of cooperation between Ning Xia and Shimane Prefecture.
1994- Requested to work together for development of jujube woods
1996- Research group for the development of the forest carried out on site investigation
1997- Signed cooperative papers for the development regarding the Shimane and Ning Xia Friendship woods. Completed an overall schedule and schedules for each year of involvement.
1998-2001 Friendship Forest is Developed (17.7ha)
2001- Cooperation papers signed for the next phase of the Shimane, Ning Xia Friendship Forest.
2002- Project started for the second phase.

Results and Prospect:
Between 1998-2003, 31 hectares of the friendship forest have been developed, this activity has contributed to the promotion of desert afforestation as well as the development of the forestry industry in Shimane Prefecture and Ning Xia. The Friendship Forest project has involved a total of 580 volunteers from both regions which has not only contributed to international exchange but also enhanced citizen awareness of afforestation and the need to preserve the global environment. It is hoped that international exchange and the awareness of preserving the global environment will continue for many years to come.
