- Motive for the start of project:
-
The Hiroshima International Cooperation Fund was established in 1995 commemorating 50 years since the atomic bombing as a part of "Generating Peace" to support the resolution of problems that cities of the world especially in Asia face and conduct other activities concerning international cooperation.
- Outline and Progress of Project:
- Since FY1996, using the interest from the fund, this international cooperation program began on a municipal level by receiving trainees and donating used technical service vehicles. By FY 2003, we have received a total of 15 trainees and donated 13 used vehicles.
In FY 1999 and 2000, in order to contribute more actively to the realization of world peace, we chose trainees from India and Pakistan, countries that conducted nuclear tests in May 1998, as participants in the program.
In FY 2004, we welcomed one trainee from Indonesia who works for the Pollution Control Division of Agency of Environment in Bandung Regency, and we will donate a used garbage truck to Thimphu, Bhutan, from which we received a trainee last year.
- Cooperation Period:
- Began in FY1996.
- Affiliations with Other Organizations:
-
Hiroshima Peace Culture Foundation (The donation of service vehicles portion of the program is commissioned to this organization.)
- Expenses:
-
Budget in FY2003: 5,334,000 yen
- Difficulties Encountered and Solutions:
- In regard to the reception of the trainee, active cooperation could be obtained from the trainee in matters of communication, arrangements and visa applications, and procedures were carried out smoothly. In regard to the donation of the service vehicle, although contact with the local staff takes time due to problems with communication systems, we are pressing firmly on with our operations.
- Results and Future Prospects:
- A certain amount of results in regard to the development of individual skills and measures to conserve the urban environment can be seen from the reception of trainees and the donation of technical service vehicles. However, in the future we would like to determine their specific needs or necessary technical skills of the trainees' cities. We would also like to consider how to support each city in more effectively resolving the problems they face.
- Problems:
-
As nine years have passed since the start of this program, we have to review the training content and methods of implementation to achieve even better results for this program. Also, we have to follow up on past years' projects.
