- Motive for the start of project:

- In order to promote citizens' initiatives and voluntary activities toward city administration, such as nurturing peace-loving people, town-planning, contributions to international society, through agriculture.
- In order to provide opportunities to consider the roles of agriculture and food shortage problems.
- Outline and Progress of Project:
- In February of FY1999, Asaminami Ward Management Committee for Foreign Aid Rice Production, which is the managing committee for this project, was established.
From May of FY1999 to November of FY2003,
citizens volunteers took part in work such as planting rice-seedlings, weeding, and harvesting in paddy fields.
The rice they produced was shipped to the Republic of Mali, along with Hiroshima citizens' messages.

From May to November in FY, this project is being continued.
*The main reason why Mali was chosen is that the NGO named 'Motherland Academy,' which we requested to ship our rice, has been the biggest supporter of this country.

Motherland Academy: (located in Shinagawa Ward of Tokyo)
We requested them to ship the rice from Tokyo to Mali, and received information from them about the situation in Mali.
Local Town Association, Eino Agricultural Association:
They provided paddy fields and engaged in water-control and fertilization of fields. Also, they took part as committee members for this project
Lions Club, Agricultural Cooperative Association:
We received some donations from these organizations. They took part as committee members for this project.
Local elementary school and junior high school, PTA, Children's Association:
They took part in the project as cooperative organizations.

Citizen volunteers are satisfied with the fact that the foreign aid rice they produced was shipped and distributed to local people in Africa. |
