  To this day, there are more than 1500 international affiliations throughout Japan, and various exchanges projects, taking in account regional characteristics, are under way. In 2006, the Council of Local Authorities for International Relations, with the support of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, decided to select from amongst the many projects conducted by local authorities or non-profit organizations, such as international exchange associations, and award those that abound in ingenuity and contribute to regional internationalization. The awarded projects will be presented throughout Japan.
