People who wish to stay permanently in Japan must apply for permission for permanent residence.
You can apply for permission for permanent residence at your regional immigration bureau. If you are granted permission for permanent residence, you will become a permanent resident and can stay in Japan for your entire life while keeping your nationality. Procedures for extension of period of stay and procedures for change of status of residence are not necessary, but when you leave Japan (for example for a vacation) you must have a re-entry permit. There are a number of conditions necessary for permission for permanent residence, so for details please contact your nearest regional immigration bureau.
Fee: 8,000 yen (stamp) when permission is given
